When the United States
Government requested that their roof project be completed in 3 months we
knew it would be a challenge. The old roof was waterlogged and tapered
from a total thickness of 10" to 4". Many projections, cooling
towers and other roof obstacles lay in our way. To make matters worse, the
request was made in October. Typically the last 3 months of the year in
Chicago are not the most conducive to high production. But the government,
taking a page from the Post Office’s book, thought neither rain nor
sleet nor snow would keep this project from proceeding. Clark Roofing Co.
accepted the challenge. With crew size exceeding 20 men at some points,
the process of replacing the old, worn out roof shifted into high gear.
The coordination needed to execute the tasks of debris removal, dump box
replacement, vapor retarder installation, tapered insulation, Koppers Coal
tar pitch roof system installation and a double pour of gravel was
immense. We could not afford any wasted effort. By the end of December the
roof was complete, just 10 days before we experienced one of the largest
snow falls in history.
